Oral surgery covers procedures that involve treating the bone or soft tissue rather than just the tooth surface. Wisdom teeth removal, extractions and implant placement are the ones patients ask us about most.
We handle a good deal of this at Roseborough Dental rather than sending patients across the city, which keeps your care with a team that already knows your history. Some cases are better managed by a specialist, and when that applies we say so directly and help arrange the referral. Knowing where that line sits is part of doing this work responsibly.
Wisdom teeth removal
Wisdom teeth are the last molars to come through, usually in the late teens or early twenties. Many people have enough room for them. Many do not.
Problems arise when a wisdom tooth cannot come through properly. It may become impacted, meaning trapped against bone or the tooth next to it, or emerge only part way, leaving a pocket where bacteria collect and cause repeated infection. Crowding, pressure on the neighbouring molar and decay in a tooth that cannot be cleaned properly are all common reasons for removal.
Not every wisdom tooth needs to come out. If yours have come through cleanly, sit in a healthy position and can be brushed and flossed, monitoring them is often the right call. We assess this with an examination and x-rays, and we will tell you plainly if removal is unnecessary.
Tooth extractions
Sometimes a tooth cannot be saved. Extensive decay, a fracture below the gumline, severe gum disease or an infection that has destroyed too much supporting bone can all reach that point.
We treat extraction as a last resort, because keeping a natural tooth is almost always the better outcome. When it is necessary, we plan what comes next at the same time. A gap changes how your bite distributes force and lets neighbouring teeth drift, so we discuss replacement options, whether that is an implant, a bridge or a denture, before rather than after.
Extractions also happen for crowding ahead of orthodontic treatment, or for baby teeth that have not come out on their own and are blocking an adult tooth.
Implant placement
Placing a dental implant is a surgical procedure. A titanium post is positioned in the jawbone to take the place of the natural root, then given several weeks to fuse with the bone before the crown is added.
Candidacy depends on your gum health, how much bone you have and its quality, your medical history and current medications. Where bone support is insufficient, additional preparatory treatment may be needed first. Our Dental Implants page covers the full process in detail.
Comfort during surgical treatment
Nobody looks forward to this. Local anaesthetic keeps the area numb throughout, and for patients who would rather not be fully alert we offer nitrous oxide, often called laughing gas, which wears off quickly, and oral sedation taken before your appointment. We will talk through what suits you at your consultation, including your medical history and any medications you take.
If you find dental treatment genuinely difficult, tell us. It changes how we plan the appointment rather than being something you have to push through.
Recovery and aftercare
Most people recover from a straightforward extraction or wisdom tooth removal within a few days, with some swelling and tenderness early on. We give you written instructions specific to your procedure, and general guidance usually includes:
- Rest for the remainder of the day and avoid strenuous activity
- Use a cold compress on the outside of your face to help with swelling
- Stick to soft foods and avoid the surgical site while it heals
- Do not smoke, since it slows healing considerably
- Avoid drinking through a straw in the first few days
- Keep the area clean, following the rinsing instructions we give you
- Take any prescribed medication as directed
Call us if you have bleeding that will not settle, pain that worsens rather than improves after two or three days, or swelling that spreads. Those are worth checking rather than waiting out.
